A New Day for U.S.-Colombia Policy--We Can Make it Happen!

After seven years of speaking truth to power, in 2007 Congress heard our call. As you know, last year Congress cut over $141 million in military aid to Colombia. Yet in this year's request, the stubborn Bush Administration again called for over 75% in military aid for Colombia. The Administration is also trying to force Congress to pass a NAFTA-style trade agreement with Colombia that will only make the poor poorer.

We must tell Congress what our vision is for U.S. policy toward Colombia. Together we can ensure Congress makes an even bigger cut to military aid in 2008 while blocking the unfair trade deal. Now is the time to tell Congress that we want ZERO military aid for Colombia, an end to aerial fumigation, respect for human rights and no more "free" trade. Will you join us?

Your donation to Witness for Peace today will support our work to change U.S. policy toward Colombia! Click here to donate now!

Call for Peace in Colombia--Join the Days of Prayer and Action

Last year hundreds of churches in the U.S. and Colombia joined together in prayer and action for peace in Colombia. Now churches in both countries are preparing to commemorate the third annual Days of Prayer and Action for Colombia on April 27 and 28, 2008. Ricardo Esquivia, a longtime Witness for Peace partner and the President of the Colombian Protestant Council of Church's Peace Commission sends a special note of encouragement. "Because the Bible says the prayer of the righteous is powerful, we the people of God in Colombia humbly ask our brothers and sisters of the United States to join us on April 27th and 28th in the Days of Prayer and Action for Peace in Colombia. May we be of one spirit as we pray and act for peace in Colombia, the United States and around the world. May God's plans become reality."

Here is how you can answer Ricardo's call.

  1. Download the Witness for Peace organizing packet here. The organizing packet has all the information you need, including sample worship materials, action ideas and more.
  2. Speak with your faith community's worship leader to ask for a special time to be dedicated to Colombia on Sunday, April 27 (if that day doesn't work, select another Sunday!). You can find additional worship materials at www.peaceincolombia.org.
  3. Plan an action for the National Day of Action for Peace in Colombia on April 28 (see below for more information).

Our Witness for Peace office has a host of resources available to make your commemoration of the Days of Prayer and Action a success. We can send you a poster for your church, a bulletin insert, a video to show during coffee hour and postcards for members of your congregation to sign and send to Congress. Please email me at jess@witnessforpeace.org to request these resources and more. Please also let us know if you will be commemorating the Days. We want to make sure your church is included on our list!

Join Tens of Thousands Across the Country Calling for a New U.S. Policy, an End to Unfair Trade and Respect for Human Rights

On April 28th tens of thousands of us will tell Congress we want zero military aid for Colombia, an end to aerial fumigations, no "free" trade for Colombia and respect for human rights.

Here is how you can get involved.

  1. Organize a postcard signing campaign in your local community. Just email jess@witnessforpeace.org and tell us how many postcards you can get signed and send to Congress. We'll send them out to you!
  2. Organize a group of people to meet with your member of Congress in his/her district office.
  3. Organize a public vigil, a film screening and more in your community. You can find out how here.
