The second most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere, Nicaragua has struggled for years under the burden of internal and external debt. Take a deeper look into the effects of free trade, debt and immigration on the Nicaraguan people.

Hear the story of one remarkable Nicaraguan woman who lives and works in the Managua city dump. Yamileth will share the first-hand impact of poverty, free trade, debt and migration on the people of Nicaragua .

Biographies
Yami PerezYamileth Perez is a Nicaraguan born and raised in Managua, who currently lives and works in Acahualinca, a large community located in and around the Managua city dump. A committed community leader in Acahualinca, Yamileth works for a fair trade Artisan store called Esperanza en Accion, and is a single mother of four beautiful daughters. Trained as a community health promoter, she has also developed various other health, education, and sports programs in her community.


Patty NarvaezPatty Narvaez is part of the Witness for Peace International Team in Managua, Nicaragua. She holds a BA in International Studies Latin America from Portland State University, and most recently worked as a community organizer and medical interpreter. Born to Nicaraguan immigrants, Patty is proud to call herself Nicaraguan-American, and after having lived in Oregon for fifteen years, calls Portland home. She will provide translation during the tour.
