Migration

The United States is a nation of immigrants, and yet some policymakers and pundits unfairly scapegoat some of our most recent immigrant neighbors, preying on the fears and insecurities of U.S. citizens.  The immigration debate therefore has revolved around border walls, deportations, and draconian policies that are not only cruel but also ineffective in addressing the important issue of migration.  Witness for Peace's long history monitoring U.S. economic policy has taught us that often these policies leave families no options but to migrate to be able to provide for their families.  We seek to educate the U.S. public and policymakers about the root causes of immigration, and to change U.S. trade and economic policy that contributes to migration.

Take Action
Obama: How Many More Arizonas?
Arizona's appalling passage of SB 1070, the most draconian anti-immigrant law in recent years, underscores the urgency of immigration reform. However, Pres. Obama recently announced that he would drop immigration reform from this year's agenda. Click here to tell the President to stop SB 1070 and put immigration reform back on his priority list.
Tell Congress to Stop Displacing Colombians
Nearly 5 million Colombians have been displaced. Yet, our government continues to send more in military aid than in humanitarian aid to Colombia, assisting the victimizers more than the victims. Help us inundate Congress with calls and emails for policies that would alleviate, not exacerbate, Colombia's crisis.
Finally, Trade We Can Support!
You know that NAFTA "free trade" has been bad for workers, the environment, and human rights. But if we're against NAFTA, what are we for? Enter the TRADE Act. The bill would renegotiate NAFTA and CAFTA and launch a new, more just trade era. It's gaining ground in Congress and needs your support.
