New England Welcomes New Regional Organizer
Witness for Peace New England Board is thrilled to announce the arrival of our new Regional Organizer, Susan Letendre of North Kingstown, R.I. She is no newcomer to Witness For Peace and has been active in the Rhode Island area, at SOA Vigils, and in Mexico and Guatemala for almost a decade, having visited Chiapas and Oaxaca, on delegations and independently. Her commitment to nonviolence has roots from the Viet Nam era that led her to Kingian non-violence training, which led her to become a certified mediator. These have served her well in her previous positions: Director of Education and Outreach for Southern RI Conservation District, trainer for Perspective Unlimited, and Executive Director for Parent Support Network of Rhode Island. For 10 years Susan has been working in the area of food justice and sovereignty. In order to better understand the injustices of our food production system, Susan studied international trade, roots and routes of migration and distribution policies. She has worked with immigrants on the border of Juarez and El Paso; and continues to be involved in the dialogue for change in trade and good production practices that will honor the independent farmer, provide for fair and just trade, and respect the environment in which we exist. She has presented workshops and seminars on topics such as “Free vs Fair Trade: Funding a Just World, One Purchase at a Time” and Right in Your Backyard: Working with Nature for Abundance. She brings to Witness for Peace the love of story telling, especially of those she meets in our sister states, and great enthusiasm to be part of the transformation for which Witness For Peace strives. In the next while, please introduce yourself to her

Witness for Peace Spokesperson Paola Gutierrez Galindo Discusses Immigration, NAFTA
Tension surrounding Mexican immigration is growing, and many would say that the system is broken, especially Paola Gutierrez Galindo. From Oaxaca, Mexico, Galindo holds a degree in Indigenous Law and is focused on the impact of migration on identity and family in Oaxacan indigenous communities. At a presentation hosted by the University of Pittsburgh Center for Latin American Studies, she explained her concern about migration as a Mexican worried about the demise of her community, a view unfamiliar to many Americans.

Tell Congress to Stop Displacing Colombians
Nearly 5 million Colombians have been displaced. Yet, our government continues to send more in military aid than in humanitarian aid to Colombia, assisting the victimizers more than the victims. Help us inundate Congress with calls and emails for policies that would alleviate, not exacerbate, Colombia's crisis.

Letter: Salem helped win compensation for coal mine's neighbors
by Aviva Chomsky, The Salem News

Many people in Salem, including Mayor Driscoll and the Salem City Council, as well as members of HealthLink, have lent their support to the small Colombian village of Tabaco, violently displaced in 2001 by the Cerrejon coal mine.
